Teacher Gift – More is said about Jesus teaching than any gift He utilized. Master teachers are the most influential of all the gifts. The master teacher is anointed to teach God’s Word and change lives.

…AND GAVE GIFTS UNTO MEN

Teacher Gift – Teaching Gift

Matthew 9:35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Mark 4:1 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.

We have more information given to us about the teacher in the Scriptures than any other gifting. This is because of the necessity for the anointed teacher. The Great Commission says Go ye therefore, and teach all nations… Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. The teacher is vital to the body of Christ, yet seems to many as the least of the gifts listed in Ephesians 4:11.

SCRIPTURE WORKSHEET

The teacher is easily recognized by the desire to teach. Every place the teacher goes becomes a place to teach. Everything becomes a teaching illustration. The apostle Paul was the same. Every place became a place to teach the things concerning the kingdom and Jesus Christ.

Mark 10:1 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.

Acts 20:20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,

The term Master usually refers to Jesus the teacher. This tells us that a teacher should be the master of the things he or she teaches.

John 13:13  Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

Teaching is a very serious gifting. James recommends that we should not desire to be a teacher because of the greater judgment that comes to the teacher. The teacher has massive influence on the beliefs of the body of Christ and will be judged for erroneous teachings.

James 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

(NIV) James 3:1 Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

The teacher will offend because the word of God offends. However, the teacher cannot regard offending men when it comes to the true teaching of the word. Nevertheless, there is a very special blessing to those who will not allow themselves to be offended by the teaching of the word.

Matthew 11:6  And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

The master teacher must be able to teach many things. Although the topic is preached, the mechanics that cause the topic to work are taught. Jesus preached the kingdom of God and taught the mechanics of the kingdom. This requires years of study and preparation if one is to become a master teacher.

Mark 6:34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

ACT 20:27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

Teachers love to learn. More than anyone else the teacher can receive information from other teachers. They then take that information and utilize it in their teachings. Also, as with Apollos, doctrines can be corrected by teachers listening to other teachers.

Luke 2:46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

Acts 18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

The Scriptures are full of warnings about false and corrupt teachers. Still, today the church is full of them. These false teachers corrupt whole households simply for the purpose of dishonest gain. There will be a price to pay. They will receive a greater judgment.

(NIV) Titus 1:11 They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach – and that for the sake of dishonest gain.

Of all the teachers that are availed to us today, we cannot overlook the Holy Spirit. This is especially true for the teacher. From time to time a teacher will discover there is no information available about what the teacher is studying. Without the help of the Holy Spirit the teacher would be lost.

John 14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Paul evidently had some problems with women teachers. He would not allow them to teach men. However, he did not have problems with Priscilla instructing Apollos. When he spoke of Priscilla and Aquila who had a church in their house, he spoke of Priscilla (wife) first. This leads us to believe that she was the true leader of the church.

John 14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

The great commission instructs first and foremost to go and teach all nations. The Lord expects His people to be taught. He sends teachers to accomplish just that.

Matthew 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matthew 28:20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

FILL IN WORKSHEET

We easily recognize a teacher by the person’s desire to teach. Every thought, every book, every experience become thoughts about teaching. Every place the teacher goes becomes a place to teach. Everything becomes a teaching illustration. The apostle Paul was this way. Every place became a place to teach the things concerning the kingdom and Jesus Christ.

The term Master in the Scriptures usually refers to Jesus, the teacher. This tells us a teacher should be the master of the things he or she teaches.

Teaching is a very serious gifting. James recommends that we should not desire to be a teacher because of the greater judgment that comes to the teacher. The teacher has a massive influence on the beliefs in the body of Christ and judged for erroneous teachings.

The teacher will offend people because the word of God offends people.

However, the teacher cannot regard offending people as wrong when it comes to the actual teaching of the Word of God. However, there is an extraordinary blessing to those who will not allow themselves to take offense by those who teach the Word.

The master teacher must be able to teach many things. Although someone preached a topic, explaining the mechanics by the teacher causes the issue to actually work. Jesus preached the kingdom of God and taught the mechanics of the kingdom. This requires years of study and preparation if one is to become a master teacher.

Teachers love to learn. More than anyone else the teacher will listen to and receive information from other teachers. They then take the information and utilize it in their teachings. Also, as with Apollos, teachers correct their doctrines by listening to other teachers.

The scriptures are full of warnings about false and corrupt teachers.

However, today the church is full of false teachers. Often these false teachers corrupt whole households simply for the purpose of dishonest gain and there will be a price to pay for those doing this. They will receive a greater judgment.

Of all the teachers availed to us today, we cannot overlook the Holy Spirit. This is especially true for the teacher who, from time to time, will discover there is no information available about what the teacher is studying. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, the teacher has no real instructions to teach.

Paul evidently had some problems with women teachers, but we must take the culture of the day into consideration. In the Jewish culture of the day, only men attended school and learned to read. Paul only had problems with women teaching and preaching who were uneducated and didn’t have a clue what they were talking about so Paul would not allow these to teach men. However, he did not have problems with Priscilla instructing Apollos. Priscilla was Greek and educated. When he spoke of Priscilla and Aquila who had a church in their house, he spoke of Priscilla (wife) first. This leads us to believe that she was the real leader of the church showing Paul actually didn’t have problems with educated women teaching.

The Great Commission instructs us to go and teach all nations. The Lord His people educated about the things of God. He sends teachers to accomplish just that.

I. RECOGNIZED BY

A. The Scriptures say more about Jesus teaching than anything else He did showing every place Jesus traveled, He taught the people.

Jesus taught in the mountains (Mat 5:1-2). He taught in all Galilee (Mat 4:23). He taught by the seaside (Mar 4:1). Jesus taught in his own country astonishing the people with his wisdom (Mat 13:54). Jesus taught in Capernaum astonishing them with his doctrine (Mar 1:21, 22; Luk 4:31). Jesus traveled about all the cities and villages teaching (Mat 9:35). He taught with authority. He taught in the synagogues (Luk 4:15; 6:6, 59). He taught in the temple (Mat 21:23; Luk 19:47; 20:1; Joh 7:14, 28; 8:2). Jesus taught in the cities and villages of his disciples (Mat 11:1). He taught while sitting in a fishing boat (Luk 5:3). He also taught all times of the day and night (Joh 3:2). It was the custom of Jesus to teach (Mar 10:1) every place He journeyed. Jesus taught along the coasts of Judea (Mar 10:1).

We easily recognize teachers by their teaching every place they go. The teacher lives to teach, so every place and any place becomes a place to teach about the things of God. It makes no difference if it is a church or a boat or a home, etc., the teacher will teach.

Mark 10:1 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.

Matthew 9:35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Luke 23:5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

John 7:35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

B. The teacher’s passion is to teach others what he or she knows and is learning. Any place will do. Paul traveled all over the known world to teach (Act 14:21; 20:20; Col 1:23). A teacher’s passion is to teach.

The Lord varied His teaching style. Jesus taught with authority (Mat 7:29). Jesus taught using parables (Mar 4:2). Often Jesus would do something and then teach about it (Act 1:1). Jesus used many teaching illustrations. Everything was a teaching example. Jesus used a fig tree, a cast net, a mustard seed, a road to Jericho, a sower sowing seed, a lost sheep, etc. Jesus used related objects to teach His doctrine.

The teacher will find clever ways to communicate the teaching and maintain his or her audience’s attention.

II. THE GREEK

The word translated teachers in Ephesians 4:11 is the Greek word didaskalos [did-as’-kal-os] meaning one who teaches concerning the things of God, and the duties of man. It’s translated as “master” (47 times); “teachers” (6 times); “teacher” (4 times); “doctors” (1 time); and “masters” (1 time) for a total of fifty-nine uses. We find didaskalos in relation to the Greek word didasko translated “taught” (40 times); “teach” (26 times); “teaching” (21) times; “teachest” (7 times); and “teacheth” (3 times) for a total of ninety-seven uses. We have more than sufficient scriptures to grasp truth about the gift of the teacher.

The word didasko means to teach by discourse with others or by delivering an illustrative discourse. There is an imparting of instructions and the instilling of doctrine by explaining or expounding a thing accompanying the teacher gift. A good preacher will also have a strong teaching gift.

III. MASTER

A. As noted previously, the same Greek word (did-as’-kal-os) translated teacher in Ephesians 4:11 and translated as master forty-seven times other places in the King James’ version.

When the Scriptures speak of Jesus as the master, it usually means Jesus, the teacher. We typically think of a master being someone lording over something or someone. The word master, when translated didaskalos in the Scriptures, actually tells us what the teacher should be. Teachers should be the master of that which he or she is teaching. It simply means the teacher has mastered what he or she teaches.

People often put Jesus to the test to see if He indeed was a master. Religious leaders asked Jesus saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. And last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. Jesus proved He was indeed the master when He answered, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven (Mat 22:24-29). We learn teachers will be put to the test.

Religious leaders examined Jesus when they questioned Him about divorce (Mat 19:3; Mar 10:2).

They put Him to the test as being the master when they asked about paying tribute money to Caesar (Mat 22:18; Mar 12:15). People checked Jesus out as master when they brought the woman caught in adultery to Him (Joh 8:6). A lawyer questioned Him as master when he asked Jesus about how to inherit eternal (Luk 10:25). We learn a teacher must be a master.

When Jesus asked Nicodemus, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? (Joh 3:10), Jesus was saying “Are you a teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things?” Obviously, Nicodemus was not master of all he should be master. They called John the Baptist master (Luk 3:12). He was not some “back woodsman.” Instead, John was a master of his material.

B. There are many verses referring to Jesus as Master.

There are far more uses of master referring to Jesus than use apostle, prophet, evangelist, or pastor when identifying the works of Jesus (Mat 8:19; 911; 12:38; 17:24; 19:16; 22:16, 24, 36; 26:18; Mar 4:38; 5:35; 9:17, 38; 10:17, 20, 35; 12:14, 19, 32; 13:1; 14:14; Luk 7:40; 8:49; 9:38; 10:25; 11:45; 12:13; 18:18; 19:39; 20:21, 28, 39; Luk 21:7; 22:11; Joh 1:38; 8:4; 11:28; 13:13, 14; 20:16). Jesus touched a large spectrum of people with his masterful teaching. He touched everyone with masterful teaching from the scribes and Pharisees to Mary and Martha, from the lawyers and publicans to the adulterers and demon possessed. As magnificent as the miracles were, only those receiving the miracles received His touched, but the master touched the lives and hearts of all then and now with His teachings as the master.

The Lord gave the teacher in the body of Christ a special anointing to touch a broad spectrum of people with his or her teachings. The more masterful the person is, the higher the ability to impact lives. This is why it is imperative to familiarize ourselves with those who labor among us (1Th 5:12). We can actually never be certain if they are indeed a master of what they teach if we are not familiar with them.

IV. GREATER CONDEMNATION

A. Because of the ability and gifting to impact lives with their teachings, the Bible gives a severe warning to the master teachers.

Teaching is a very serious gifting. James actually warns people not to be teachers. A teacher can easily cause others to fall into error through false teachings. People receive the anointed teacher no matter if the instructions are true or false (Rom 11:29). Again, we see how knowing those who teach us is a necessity (1Th 5:12).

B. However, as severe as the warning is about teaching, the scriptures also bless the authentic and diligent teacher.

When we receive good teaching from the Word, we are to share all good things with the teacher (Gal 6:6).

(NIV) Galatians 6:6 Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.

V. REGARD NOT MEN

A. Even the Pharisees and the remainder of the religious system knew Jesus did not regard men when it came to his teachings (Mat 22:16; Mar 12:14; Luk 20:21).

A master teacher will offend, but will never cause offense intentionally. Nonetheless, the word of God does offend (Mat 13:21; Mar 4:17). Even though Jesus taught using parables, He offended many with his teachings. He offended those in his hometown (Mat 13:57). Jesus offended the Pharisees (Mat 15:12). He offended his mother, brothers, and sisters (Mar 6:3). Jesus was offensive with many of his teachings.

We learn an authentic teacher will offend. The teacher cannot concern him or her self with tickling the ears of the listeners, and even the gentlest of people will cause offense if they teach the word of God.

B. Though accurate scriptural teaching will be offensive, there is a special blessing a person does not allow an offensive teaching to offend them (Mat 11:16; Luk 7:23; Joh 16:1).

The master teacher must be able to communicate the fact of how true teaching will be offensive but is also able to describe the blessings coming when people receive the instructions.

VI. GOAL OF THE TEACHER

The goal of the teacher is to bring the students to the teacher’s level of revelation and application. Jesus said, A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher (Luk 6:40). A teacher’s passion is to teach others what the teacher learned.

VII. TAUGHT MANY THINGS

The Lord makes certain the teachers of the Word of God prepares themselves to teach many things. The Lord had a constant topic, and this topic was the kingdom of God (Mat 4:23; 9:35; Mar 1:14; Luk 8:1). Then the Lord would expound on exactly how that kingdom operates. Our Lord was well able to teach in depth on all subjects (Mar 6:34). The apostle will be best on one topic, but the teacher will be master many things topics.

Paul, as he moved into his gift of teaching, declared all the counsel of God (Act 20:27). A teacher must prepare and investigate as many different teachings on a subject as possible if he or she desires to be a master teacher. After preparation, the teacher can then allow the word of God and the Holy Spirit to be the final authority. It is sad to observe a person attempt to teach on a subject to which he or she has not adequately prepared. In doing so, the person makes a mockery of themselves and usually teach an untruth. Teaching requires proper preparation.

VIII. TEACHING AND PREACHING

Teaching is not preaching and preaching is not teaching. However, teaching often accompanies preaching and preaching often accompanies teaching. Preaching appears to be the topic and teaching is the mechanics. Jesus preached the kingdom and taught how His kingdom functions. As pointed out in our study of the evangelist, there is invitational preaching (euaggelizo), and there is preaching demanding repentance (kerusso). Jesus preached both styles as well as did the apostles.

Teaching is instructional and explains the preaching. Preaching is both invitational and provoking which will arouse and excite the teaching, so a good teacher will blend in a little preaching to flavor the teaching. A person only standing and lecturing can quickly lose those listening attention.

IX. TEACHERS LOVE TO LEARN

Every teacher loves to sit under good teaching. Also, every good teacher will seek out more instructions. A teacher always desires to learn so they can better teach and expand what they already know. The teacher realizes more than anyone how important it is receiving information from another teacher. Jesus knew this and said …my Father hath taught me, I speak these things (Joh 8:28).

Jesus said The disciple (learner, follower) is not above his master (Mat 10:24; Luk 6:40). Our thought here is the disciple needs the master (teacher) to continue learning until the disciple has matured in the teaching. Teachers need teachers and desire passionately to learn. Even as a young boy, Jesus loved to sit in the midst of teachers listening and asking questions (Luk 2:46). The apostle Paul said he sat at the feet of Gamaliel (Act 22:3). People expounded to Apollos the way more perfectly by Aquila and Priscilla (Act 18:26).

X. BAD TEACHING

As with everything else, the scriptures are full of warnings about false and corrupt teaching. People teach the doctrines of men as if they were the commandments of the Lord (Mat 15:9; Mar 7:7). Paul asked Timothy to charge people to teach no other doctrine (1Ti 1:3). One would not think a teacher would need charged to teach only true doctrine. However, it is not the case. Still today people manufacture their own teachings and thoughts as if they are the word of God.

There are those who teach understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm (1Ti 1:7). What does this mean? It merely means there are those who only parrot what someone else said. This is extremely prevalent today especially concerning eschatology and the kingdom of God.

Paul warned how a time would come and people would not endure sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear (2Ti 4:3). The false teachers ruin whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach. Paul tells us why they do this. He said, for the sake of dishonest gain (Tit 1:11) people teach false doctrines. Peter said there were false prophets in the Old Testament even as there shall be false teachers among you who privily shall bring in damnable heresies (2Pe 2:1).

Amazingly, with such potent warnings, people continue to not endure sound doctrine. Many damnable heresies are floating around today. The primary reason is people are too lazy to read the Word of God for themselves. With only a little reading a person can obtain enough truth to recognize false teachings. Still, many prefer to parrot the preacher and teach what they do not understand.

1 Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

(NIV) 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Titus 1:11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

(NIV) Titus 1:11 They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach – and that for the sake of dishonest gain.

XI. HOLY SPIRIT THE TEACHER

We have a promise from Jesus. The promise is the Holy Ghost shall teach us (Luk 12:12). The Holy Spirit will teach us all things (Joh 14:26). Also, the Holy Spirit will cause us to remember what the Lord has taught us (Joh 14:26).

The apostle Paul said he did not speak the things man’s wisdom taught. Instead, they spoke the things the Holy Ghost taught (1Co 2:13). Man did not give Paul his revelation (Gal 1:12). The Spirit not only taught Paul how to experience spiritual things but he also enabled Paul to recall and teach spiritual things. This is an aspect of the anointing. Paul said he could compare spiritual things with spiritual (1Co 2:13).

Apostle John warned people regarding false teachers and said, the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie (1Jo 2:27). John is not saying we do not need Holy Spirit anointed teaching. The context of what John said is some were attempting to draw God’s people away from Christ with seducing teaching (1Jo 2:26). John said, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him (1Jo 2:27). John is saying if they had the Holy Spirit, then the Holy Spirit would teach them to abide in Christ, not leave.

XII. WOMEN TEACHERS

There is a fascinating and controversial verse concerning women teachers found in 1 Timothy 2:12 and says, But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. Paul’s reason was God first formed Adam, then He formed Eve and the serpent deceived Eve, not Adam. (1Ti 2:13-14). I don’t know anyone who totally understands what Paul means in these verses, but I am happy Paul clearly said, I suffer not a woman to teach.

It was how Paul felt. Not allowing women to teach was Paul’s personal position, not an imperative command from the Lord. This is true because Paul had no trouble with Priscilla, the wife of Aquila, helping instruct Apollos (Act 18:24-26). Also, Priscilla and Aquila had a church in their house (Rom 16:5). Interestingly, as Paul tells the Romans about Priscilla and Aquila, he mentions Priscilla first (Rom 16:3). This tends to suggest Priscilla was the primary church leader.

Evidently, Paul had terrible experiences with women teachers.

The Scriptures give us one report of a situation with a woman who the Lord referred to as Jezebel (Rev 2:20-23). The Lord said the church allowed her to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. Neither was the Lord’s problem a woman taught, but rather what was taught. Though Paul did not allow a woman to teach, obviously other church leaders did. I often wonder where the church would be today if not for women’s teaching. I cringe when I hear dogmatic teaching on Paul’s position toward women today.

The older women taught the young women. Among the things they should teach are holiness, not to slander, not addicted to wine, to love their husbands, and love their children. Also, older women should teach the young women to be self-controlled, pure, be busy at home, be kind, and subject to their husbands (Tit 2:3-5).

XIII. PAUL

A. The Lord ordained Paul as an apostle and a preacher, but also ordained Paul a teacher of the Gentiles (1Ti 2:7; 2Ti 1:11).

We learn much about things we should teach by observing some of the verses speaking of the Apostle Paul’s teachings. Paul would enter a city and, if possible, remain there for some time (Act 18:11). Paul preached the kingdom of God and taught those things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ (Act 28:31). Remaining around the people gave them an opportunity to know Paul.

B. Paul taught to turn from the teachings of Moses (Law) and attach to the things Jesus Christ taught (Act 21:21, 28).

Peter referred to this as repentance (Acts 2:38). He taught physical circumcision was no longer necessary (Act 21:21), and he taught others to teach (1Co 4:17) the things of God. Paul taught teachers should commit to faithful people the things they know, and then those faithful shall be able to instruct others also (2Ti 2:2).

Acts 28:31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

XIV. THE LORD’S PEOPLE ARE TO LEARN

The Great Commission is first and foremost to go and teach all nations (Mat 28:19). Our Lord expects his people taught. He anoints people with the gift of teaching to teach His people. They are to instruct people to observe all things the Lord commanded (Mat 28:20). This requires study and application. The Lord desire His teachings shared daily in every house (Act 5:42). Jesus Christ and His kingdom taught and preached everywhere.

Sadly, though the first aspect of the Great Commission is to teach all nations when it comes time to teach, most cannot. So many today are unable to explain to others what they have learned and need to learn again (Heb 5:12). It seems we can never get away from the milk into the strong meat.

The Lord will bring individuals to His church to make sure His people receive teaching. Barnabas traveled great lengths to find Paul and bring him to Antioch. The Lord planted them at Antioch to teach the people (Act 11:26). When ready, the Holy Ghost separated them from the congregation and sent them to the nations to teach (Act 13:2). The Holy Ghost trains teachers, and it takes years of preparation and study to become efficient and a master teacher.

The teacher is a gift of the Lord to his church. What would we do without them?
